Top 5 tips to care for your hair extensions

9 Feb

bTo keep your hair extensions looking tip top you need to take care of them. Regular maintenance, using the right products and avoiding those which cause damage are all vital to keep extensions looking healthy and glossy.

So here are Dream Girl’s Top Five Tips for keeping your hair extensions looking as good as they did on day one.

1. For day to day care remember your hair extensions are made of 100% human hair. Therefore they can wear and tear in exactly the same way as your natural hair can. Human hair extensions are made with the root and cuticle still attached. Great care is taken to lay each hair strand by strand. This makes it easier in terms of keeping hair tangle free and glossy. It also means you need to protect it. Don’t tug or pull when you’re brushing. Instead use a nylon brush with softer bristles. Similarly don’t tie hair back too tight as you’ll pull at the roots. You can still wear up-dos, but nothing that drags the roots back.

2. Wash your hair extensions regularly to keep them clean and nourished. Even though hair extensions have been processed they still maintain some of the natural oil that keeps hair looking shiny so they need looking after.

Before washing, brush to remove any tangle. Rinse and shampoo with a product especially designed for hair extensions. Rinse and then use a conditioner. The weaved section, where the hair extensions meet your natural hair, needs to dry completely or it can be weighed down by the water and cause damage.

3. Heat is one of the most damaging things for your hair. Having wet hair can be a nuisance, and you especially don’t want to go to bed with it but you should try to allow hair to dry naturally as often as possible. If using a hair dryer make sure it’s on one of the lowest settings. Straighteners and hair curlers apply heat directly to the hair and damage it. Hair is like wax so heat melts it. The more you use it, though the more damage it does causing split ends and hair to lose its shine.

4. There are some who say you can’t go swimming when you have hair extensions, or sunbathe on holiday. Nonsense. You do have to take precautions though. IN direct sunlight your hair can get damaged and burnt just as your skin can. Keeping hair tied back and using a regular nourishing treatment protects it from damage. You can buy hair products designed for the sun and to protect the hair.

When swimming to minimise the chlorine getting onto your hair plait it. Rinse carefully once you’re out of the pool and shampoo thoroughly. Wrap in a towel to dry and don’t rub as it will damage the ends. Comb gently to remove tangle.

5. Regular maintenance is the key to hair extensions. Your stylist will advise you on how often you should visit but it’s usually every 6-8 weeks. You might need a little re-tightening or a trim to remove any damaged ends. This helps hair stay looking healthy and glossy.
