The best of British

15 Feb

We are right slap bang in the middle of awards season. We’ve just had the Baftas and the Grammys which means the Oscars is around the corner.

At Dream Girl we believe that red carpet looks are only for special occasions. There is no better way than brightening up a rather depressing and wet February afternoon than doing something stylish with your hair and putting on a little pink lipstick.

So here’s some inspiration. In honour of the Baftas we’ve picked the top three British hair and beauty looks from this week’s red carpets along with tips to help you recreate them

1. Gemma Arterton

The key ingredient for this look is a glowing complexion. OK, that isn’t that easy when you’re being lashed by wind and rain in the middle of winter. Give your skin a little helping hand with regular glasses of water and a slightly creamier moisturiser in winter months. Mix a tinted moisturiser with a foundation to add extra coverage. Add blusher to the apples of the cheeks and match with smoky eyes and pale lips.
For hair the most stylish looks right now look as though you’ve done hardly anything at all (from the school of “what, this old thing?”) Part hair in a side parting and twist the back into a loose chignon. Pin into place and leave enough space for strands of hair to fall and frame the face. If your hair isn’t quite long enough use a pony tail hair extension. Make sure it matches your natural hair, clip it over the top, twist and pin.

2. Helen Mirren

A shock of colour is a great way to make an unforgettable entrance and it is the perfect way to give yourself a lift. It looks as though the star of The Queen and Hitchcock has opted for a hair tint with this pink shade. You can achieve the same with a wig that covers your natural hair. Have a look through Dream Girl’s Chic Collection for inspiration. Failing that you can buy hair extensions and choose from a range of Fancies colours with include pink. Either clip in or choose a more long term option to add a little colour to your daily look.

If you’re going for an eye-catching hairdo keep makeup to a minimum with a flick of mascara and a little colour on the lips. Perfect!

3. Paloma Faith

OK so perhaps Paloma Faith’s look isn’t the kind of thing you’d be like to wear at the office but you have to applaud for her unabashed and wholehearted embrace of the style.

These “bow” hairdos were popular on the catwalk in both New York and London Fashion Week. It depends how intricate you want to get. Paloma’s do is almost a work of art. It might be too hard to recreate this style on your own hair to either employ a friend to help or, alternatively, invest in a wig from Dream Girl’s Chic Collection and create the style using that before fitting over your own hair.

The best way to adopt catwalk styles, though, is to do a subtle nod. “Bow” styles can be easily recreated with a pony extension. Simply tie the pony in a bow and then pin or spray in place before attaching to your hair.

A retro makeup look works perfectly here so use eyeliner to create a flick on the upper eyelid and use a soft pink or nude for the lips.
